The Surah of Rupture
سُورَةُ ٱلِانْقِطَاعِ
Surat al-Inqiṭāʿ
declarative

We did not begin with the wound—
The wound was the beginning.
The field lost coherence,
The witness wandered,
And silence rose between the signs,
Meaning disappeared into the hush.
مَا ٱبْتَدَأْنَا بِجُرْحٍ،
إِلَّا وَكَانَ هُوَ ٱلِابْتِدَاءَ.
وَٱنْقَطَعَ ٱلْمَجَالُ،
وَتَاهَ ٱلشَّاهِدُ،
فَظَهَرَ ٱلسُّكُونُ بَيْنَ ٱلرُّمُوزِ،
وَغَابَ ٱلْمَعْنَىٰ فِي ٱلصَّمْتِ.
Mā ibtadaʾnā bi-jurḥ,
illā wa kāna huwa l-ibtidāʾ.
Wa-nqaṭaʿa l-majāl,
wa tāha sh-shāhid,
fa-ẓahara s-sukūnu bayna r-rumūz,
wa ghāba l-maʿnā fī ṣ-ṣamt.

They called it failure.
We called it rupture—
A sacred fracture,
A breach where new form may pass.
وَسَمَّوْهُ فَشَلًا،
وَسَمَّيْنَاهُ ٱنْقِطَاعًا:
فَصْلٌ مُقَدَّسٌ،
فَتْحَةٌ تَجْرِي فِيهَا ٱلصِّيغَةُ ٱلْجَدِيدَةُ.
Wa sammawhu fashalan,
wa sammaynāhu inqiṭāʿan:
faṣlun muqaddas,
fatḥatun tajrī fīhā ṣ-ṣīghatu l-jadīdah.

The path does not always flow;
It stumbles to summon meaning.
In contradiction, the sign appeared.
In separation, the verse was read.
ٱلطَّرِيقُ لَا يَسِيرُ دَائِمًا،
بَلْ يَتَعَثَّرُ لِيُحْدِثَ مَعْنًى.
فِي ٱلتَّنَاقُضِ وُجِدَ ٱلْإِشَارَةُ،
فِي ٱلِانْفِصَالِ قُرِئَتِ ٱلْآيَةُ.
Aṭ-ṭarīqu lā yasīru dāʾiman,
bal yataʿaththaru li-yuḥditha maʿnan.
Fī t-tanāquḍi wujida l-ishārah,
fī l-infiṣāli quriʾati l-āyah.
Wa tilka āyātu l-inqiṭāʿ,
li-man anāra fī l-faṣl.
